The Lockheed AC-130 gunship concept is nothing new – engage the ground target with the precision fire from a safe distance. This weapon system includes the delivery platform (C-130 aircraft), sophisticated weapons package and extensive targeting suite. Various versions of AC-130 were raining fire from the sky during Vietnam War, various Cold War conflicts, Gulf War and Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Package of armament include a variety of cool hardware: 7.62 mm mini guns (above), 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannons, 30mm Bushmasters cannon, Bofors 40mm auto cannon, and one 105 mm M102 cannon. However, there are more options of armament in the inventory.
This particular Lockheed AC-130A “Azrael” destroyed a significant number of Iraqi military vehicles freeing Kuwait on Al Jahra highway.
If you around Dayton, Ohio – stop by the National Museum of USAF – to see this airaft and many more!
